God's Light Shining Brightly

ASHA, please allow me to introduce her to you.  She is one of our new Catering students for 2019. She arrived at school for enrollment, but was in the process of refusal because she did not have a sponsor to pay her tuition fees. She was able to find employment at a local hotel during the month of December, which is high season for tourism. She was able to save enough money to buy her uniform and shoes and the hotel manager purchased her the eight required notebooks and sent her off to the Marianist Technical Institute.

Here is some of what she wrote about herself in Communications Class,  I like to read novels, especially love stories. I got pregnant 1 year after high school which was 2016, it was difficult and confusing, but my mum convinced and stayed beside me and I am glad for everything especially my son and I thank God also. We thought we would not make it, but thanks to God, am glad, I even found a good friend and he decided to help me in getting scholar-ship and I did and am happy and I know will not let him down, since he has faith in me. His like a family to us, it all I can say about him.
My dad died a few weeks before my K.C.S.E. exams. So painful since he was my everything.

 Asha is a 23 year old Muslim girl, living with her mother, older sister and son. She is one of the first to arrive to school, sits in the front row at class, willing to participate and was voted as one of the class representatives.
 
I was able to visit her house yesterday to meet her family. Her mother Margret, friend Mariam and son Lamar were there. We sat in an open cement floored  hallway that divided four rooms, a kitchen, with an old couch for a bed, a room to store things, a bedroom and the fourth was an unoccupied  room for rent ($20/month). For lunch we went out to purchase food from the street. We got 4 chapatti (tortilla like flat bread), a small bowl of green grams ( like lentils) and a bowl of sliced, battered and fried potatoes for about 100 shillings-$1.00. This was to feed five of us. She told me that they eat this often because it is cheaper than cooking for themselves. And this is the only meal of the day, which is common for many Kenyans. She does not complain at all, she is very joyful as you can see in the picture.

Just reflect on this snapshot of what we know of her. The KCSE exam is very stressful for students here, it is a one-time shot, never a second chance. Her father becomes ill and passed away, she becomes pregnant and her very upset mother prays, supports and convinces her to keep the baby and now she is able to have a college education.
I believe these are the wonderous ways of weaving us together as the Children of God. It is great that we can in changing this young ladies life to become financially sustaining, but how is God working in our hearts through Asha?
